This what we’re doing it for –
‘A lifeline and a place of sanctuary for the sufferers of substance misuse and street culture’ OUR MISSION To provide a safe space and an open hand to those who suffer through substance misuse and its associated barriers. OUR VISION To give hope and opportunity to those who have neither. OUR CORE VALUES Inclusion, opportunity, and motivation to live unhindered by trauma and substance dependency. ABOUT US Ben’s Centre was founded in Sheffield in 1996. At the time, new town hall bobby, PC Ian Sherman (Ben) recognised a need for a new approach to street drinkers in the Peace Gardens area. Back then, they were put in cells until they sobered up and then released without support; it was a repeating cycle. But, Ben built positive relationships with this group during his rounds, and found what they really wanted was just their own space, off the streets, to support each other. Ben’s Centre is now more than a day centre. We also provide outreach services and support network for vulnerable people. The service is unique in the city, in that it operates as a damp centre, meaning clients who are currently using substances can access their services. This means the centre sees a section of people often at their lowest and at a chaotic period in their lives. Ben’s uses it’s holistic, non-judgemental approach to guide clients to support services, and eventually our hope is recovery and stability. The centre is an independent charity so has no centralised funding, we rely on grants and brilliant local people doing great things to keep us in existence. This year Ben’s will celebrate 25 years in Sheffield and we have some big plans to expand our offering into training, mentoring and education for our clients to help them fulfil their potential and find a passion that gives them purpose. Supporting us There are many ways to support us through volunteering, donations of clothes, goods or food or skills swapping (if you have a skill and some time you could volunteering to add to our training programme ‘Plant a Seed’, we would love to hear from you!).
